French 1844-1910 Henri Rousseau Locations He was born in Laval in the Loire Valley into the family of a plumber. He attended Laval High School as a day student and then as a boarder, after his father became a debtor and his parents had to leave the town upon the seizure of their house. He was mediocre in some subjects at the high school but won prizes for drawing and music. He worked for a lawyer and studied law, but "attempted a small perjury and sought refuge in the army," serving for four years, starting in 1863. With his father's death, Rousseau moved to Paris in 1868 to support his widowed mother as a government employee. In 1871, he was promoted to the toll collector's office in Paris as a tax collector. He started painting seriously in his early forties, and by age 49 he retired from his job to work on his art. His wife died in 1888 and he later remarried. Rousseau claimed he had "no teacher other than nature", although he admitted he had received "some advice" from two established Academic painters, Felix Auguste-Clement and Jean-Leon Gerome. Pedro Berruguete
(c. 1450 - 1504) was a Spanish painter; his art is regarded as a transitional style between gothic and Renaissance. Born in Paredes de Nava, Spain, he went to Italy in 1480 and worked in Federigo da Montefeltro's court in Urbino, where he could see some works by Melozzo da Forle. He came back to Spain in 1482 and painted in several cities, such as Sevilla, Toledo and Ávila. He was the father of an important sculptor, Alonso Berruguete, considered the most important sculptor in Renaissance Spain.
Evaristo Baschenis
1617-1677 Italian Evaristo Baschenis Galleries Italian painter. He came from a family of painters originally from Averara, Lombardy, but with different branches active in the provinces of Bergamo and Trentino, mostly specializing in fresco decoration of churches. He probably started working within the same regional tradition but soon came to specialize in still-lifes and moved beyond his familys limited and provincial style to create a richer and more complex art.
Vicente Palmaroli Gonzalez
1834-1896 Spanish Vicente Palmaroli Gonzalez Gallery His father was the Italian lithographer, Gaetano Palmaroli and he studied in San Fernando's Royal Academy. He later went to Rome in 1857 to complete his training, and he lived there until 1866. One year later, he went to the Paris World's Fair of 1867. He met Ernest Meissonier, who influenced his later works. He was academician in San Fernando's Royal Academy, and director in the Spanish Academy in Rome and Prado Museum (1893-1896).
